Bleach - You can kind of tell that bleach is toxic is by its intensely strong and caustic odor alone, but it is a harmful ingredient. Contact with bleach can burn human tissue, internally or externally, especially in small children
Fragrance - a tricky ingredient because "fragrance" can be so many different things. Often created from petroleum and coal by-products which are classified as carcinogens, hormone disrupters, neurotoxins, and skin and respiratory irritants. The fragrance industry is self-regulated, with out safety standards in place to regulate the ingredients.
Phthalates - these are endocrine disrupters that harmful to neurological, reproductive, and developmental systems of humans, and often phthalates are unnamed or included in the "fragrance" name in the label.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) - These SLS and SLES are linked to skin & eye irritation, organ toxicity, reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption & ecotoxicology. The manufacturing of these also leads to a highly toxic & carcinogenic by-product called 1,4 dioxane.
1,4 Dioxane - shown to cause cancer in animal studies, 1,4 Dioxane is already considered toxic by the state of California and thought to be toxic to brain and central nervous system, kidneys, liver and respiratory system.
Optical Brighteners - the Environmental Working Group (EWG) recommends avoiding these because while they make your clothes appear brighter after a wash they can be irritating to your skin and eyes and harmful to the environment.
Phosphates and EDTA - these two chemicals are used to help detergent work better in hard water, but they are best to avoid because of the environmental concerns. Phosphates can cause algae blooms and disrupt the ecosystem, and often when phosphates are eliminated from an ingredient list they are replaced with EDTA which has been found toxic in certain studies.
Quaternium-15 - this ingredient releases formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen.
Formaldehyde - not only is this chemical used to preserve dead bodies, but it is a known carcinogen.
Petroleum Distillates - while this chemical is used to remove grease from laundry, it is a carcinogen. Be aware, it also presents under the names: aliphatic petroleum naphtha, petroleum naphtha, and rubber solvent.
Nonylphenol Ethoxylate (NPE) - working as a surfactant, NPE chemicals help as a "wetting agent" so that the water from the laundry machine can penetrate the clothing more efficiently, and these chemicals are already banned in Canada and Europe because of their suspected carcinogen properties and the resulting hormone disruption.
Borax - often used when avoiding chemicals in laundry, Borax should still be avoided as it is toxic to children and according to the EWG it is an irritant for skin and eyes.
